ArcMail Technology Alert: Story of Cheney's Missing E-Mails Highlights Need for Email Archiving Technologies

Shreveport, LA. - March 3, 2008 - According to an Associate Press article posted on MSNBC.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23367672) dated February 27, 2008,

"When Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald wanted to find out what was going on inside Vice President Dick Cheney's office, the prosecutor in the CIA leak probe made a logical move. He dropped a grand jury subpoena on the White House for all the relevant e-mail.

"One problem: Even though White House computer technicians hunted high and low, an entire week's worth of e-mail from Cheney's office was missing."

Among the issues noted in the article was the fact that, "There was no automatic system to ensure that e-mail was archived and preserved."

"A key reason organizations need to archive data is so that it can be found in case of a lawsuit or an investigation by a regulatory agency. What we see here is that Cheney’s emails were subpoenaed but subsequently could not be found,” said Todd Gates, CEO of ArcMail Technology. “There are many archiving technologies, ArcMail Defender included, that can simply and easily help individuals and organizations secure email and find it on the fly. This embarrassment for the Administration could have been easily prevented with the right tools."

ArcMail's flagship solution, ArcMail Defender, is self-contained appliance that automatically captures all inbound, outbound and internal email. Featuring a user-friendly web-based interface, ArcMail Defender provides organizations a simple way to manage the burgeoning number of email messages and comply with current legal and regulatory requirements by allowing easy storage and retrieval functionality. The appliance fully indexes and archives all email headers, bodies and attachments in real-time so that they can be searched, viewed and retrieved via the Defender search engine. Defender is easy to install and configure, and does not require additional software or hardware.

"This article from the Associated Press underscores the need for email archiving and management solutions for all organizations—large to small," noted Gates. “Organizations, both public and private, have a need to preserve information. Government officials and agencies also have a public responsibility to do so. ”
